Notes for the Genus:

Mesembryanthemum

The genus Mesembryanthemum occurs in Angola, Namibia, and the Northern, Western, and Eastern Cape Provinces and the Northwest Province of South Africa. The leaves of all species are characterized by conspicuous water cells. Most species are annuals, but the larger species are perennial. They grow easily from seed but are rarely cultivated, except for M. crystallinum, which is invasive and now widely naturalized in many parts of the world.
