Notes for the Genus:
Gasteria
The succulent genus Gasteria is endemic to South Africa, growing in the dry regions of the south and south-eastern Cape. Adapted to the erratic rainfall of their ecosystem, they are slow-growing xerophytic perennials, drought-resistant, shade-loving, and shallow-rooted. They are distinguished from aloes and haworthias, to which they are closely related, by their recurved pendulous flowering stalks and gasteriform (stomach-shaped), curved flowers, loosely arranged on spreading racemes. Many of the smaller species such as G. glomerata and G. bicolor var. liliputana are fine pot subjects that do well on a sunny windowsill. They are propagated by leaf cuttings (stem cuttings in the case of G. rawlinsonii) and by seed.
